ANNA SELBY is a writer, researcher, editor, & naturalist. Her poetry often explores our connection with water & the natural world: she writes poetic-studies of different species in-situ directly from life, often underwater, & aims for these poems to share a sense of compassion & attentiveness to the environment. Her most recent chapbook Field Notes was a Bestseller for two years running with The LRB Bookshop, was featured on BBC Radio 4’s Front Row & Josie Long's Short Cuts, & was an Irish Times Book of the Year. Anna is a Lecturer on the Engaged Ecology Masters at Schumacher College & is doing a Practice Led PhD on Empathy, Ecology, & Plein Air Poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University. She is editor of environmental, feminist publisher Hazel Press & was one of the judges for the 2022 Ginkgo Prize (the biggest Eco-Poetry competition in the world). She offers mentoring to environmental writers; collaborates with dancers, choreographers & conservationists; & works on cross-artform, poetry-dance & multi-disciplinary pieces that tour the UK. Previously, Anna has been Writer-in-Residence at Cambridge Conservation Initiative, The Wordsworth Trust, & Wealden Literary festival. // Find out more at: www.annamariaselby.co.uk

Anna Selby’s Field Notes takes us beneath the waves, with poems & poetic-studies written on waterproof notebooks in & under the Atlantic Ocean over three years, whilst observing marine environments & species. Part of the magic of reading the notes made underwater is the feeling of swimming, so visceral, at times, it’s shocking. In Field Notes, we’re in the realm of sensual discovery, of casting aside the anthropomorphism that can pollute our relationships with creatures, both in the air & in the sea. Whether she is swimming with sharks, stingrays & dolphins, or summiting a volcano in the dark, this work is immersed in immediacy & intimacy; illuminating observation in the language of precision, transformation & scientific respect.
